THE STUDIO & THE CLASSROOM
Art is often described as a spark, but in the studio, it is more accurately a language of translation. As a visual artist and educator based in Halifax, my work is centered on the transition from looking at a subject to truly seeing it.
My personal practice is built on a dual foundation of conceptual depth and technical rigor. At OCAD University, I developed the theoretical framework to understand the "why" behind a piece of art. This was balanced by intensive, hands-on training at Central Technical School, where I mastered the "how" of figurative sculpture and traditional drawing and painting. This combination allows me to move fluidly between the tactile weight of a clay form and the rich, layered textures of oils and acrylics. Whether I am working on a large-scale canvas or a sculpture, my process is a constant dialogue between intellectual inquiry and physical craft.
In the classroom, I believe students are not just looking for instructions. They are looking for agency. Whether I am conducting live demonstrations at Cambrian College or working with students within the Halifax Regional Centre for Education, the goal is the same: to demystify the technical process. There is a specific transformation that happens when a few structural lines suddenly become a human face with weight and light. In that moment, a student moves from being a passive observer to a confident creator.
My commitment to the arts community extends from the formal curriculum of the public school board to my home studio, where I provide personalized mentorship to aspiring artists. I also facilitate a weekly lunchtime art club for grades 6 through 9 at school, providing a vital sanctuary for young makers to find community and develop their personal voices.
Ultimately, my work is about providing the tools for that translation. Through a painting, a sculpture, or a lesson plan, I aim to bridge the gap between an internal vision and the tangible world.
